Until today, nobody bothered to take out the tax from their account. The govenrment is bloody stupid, has no clue whatsoever to run the place. I have been there. It is shameful that a country got so far. The people should go to the streets against the government and nobody else. One word says it all - Nepotism.

And now it starts ........ Something in Cyprus is now potentially going to affect us all. Ftse is dropping, markets dropping. And if there is a rush on bank withdrawal then it could get worse

Whilst the Govt has to take the blame - how much are they under the thumb of the German led European Bank who are providing bailout money.
Isn't this a tax forced on Cyprus for that bailout ??

Is this a reaction to the EB lending money to Greece and see it go down the drain ??

Its true, Greece needs to address its countries Tax avoiders ....... but these actions only attack people who actually have their money in local banks. The tax fraudsters wouldn't be leaving it in local bank accounts

So the honest pay for the dishonest

Joe, I'm a journalist at the BBC in the UK- could you possibly drop me an email - hoping to talk on this. [email protected]
Thanks!

The money will simply be taken from accounts.

This is nothing short of robbery.

Imagine if you had just transferred money to Cyprus to buy a property? What then? Will you lose 9.9% of it for investing in Cyprus?

Hi all,

I'm a reporter from Bloomberg News helping to cover the Cyprus bank levy story. I appreciate this is a difficult time but would really like to interview some British expats about the situation and how it may affect them personally.

I can be reached at [email protected], @crowleykev on twitter or +44-207-073-3304. Feel free to pass on my details to any friends or relatives who may be interested in being interviewed.

Many thanks,

Kevin Crowley

With an estimated $20-25billion dollars of Russian money in Cypriot banks, much of which has a dubios background the decision of the EU not to give 100% support to Cyprus which has become a tax haven is understandable.
The delay in a vote suggests that negotiations are continuing which hopefully will reduce the impact on the domestic savers with less than E100,000 in their accounts.

Nobody would buy a property like that in the UK so why when we go abroad do we start acting differently?
Hi Joe King, it was a question not advise, it was at the time we bought common practice here! I would never dare advise anyone how to buy/sell a house!

Yes, it is really unbelievable!
That should make us think a lot about the situation in which we are and governments...

Default interest rates in Cyprus

As you can see in the attached file , a Cyprus bank offered 10% on 5 years deposit over 150,000 $.
Are these normal rates for Cyprus ?

Which ever way they try it,it's a disgrace.Yet another attempt to foist collective guilt on the "man in the street".......and here was me thinking the economic crisis was the fault of the banks and government, when really it was me

Won't get far with that. In summer 1992 the Italian government did exactly the same thing. After close of business on the Friday afternoon passed a law for the levy. Before the banks reopened on the Monday following your account had been raided. No amount of screaming, protests, indignation, changed a thing. Dick Turpin rides again in the Eurozone!
