Default US Visitors Visa to the UK questions

Hi,

I live in the UK and am a UK citizen and my girlfriend is a US citizen and
is currently in the US. She will be coming over to stay for just under 6
months in July as a visitor.
She has been here before for 5 months as a visitor.
Our intentions are that she will simply come here and stay for 6 months,
then fly back. No marriage planned, she won't be working or doing anything
she can't do on a visitors visa.

I am worried that UK customs may for some reason or other not let her into
the country as a visitor and send her back to The States. I have seen other
posts from people saying this has happened to them.

Can anyone give advice on how to minimize the risk of her not being allowed
into the UK? Also does anyone know if its possible for her to get a visitors
Visa in advance from the British Consulate in the US, so we know that she
can definitely get into the UK on arrival?

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks

Dom

Most posts in this newsgroup deal with the reverse, visiting the USA from
some other country. You are probably better off posting your question in a
UK-related newsgroup. I, for one, don't know anything about UK immigration
laws.

I don't know about the UK. In the reverse situation, trying to get a
visitors visa would be a very bad move. Since the logic behind it is
universal rather than specific to US law, it may also be a bad move for
the UK.

The reason is that when applying for a visa that you don't need, you are
making yourself suspicious. They'll scrutinize you more than usual, and
then usually deny the visa - which, at least in the case of the US, also
would make it difficult to later travel without a visa.

And a visa doesn't guarantee admission, either. It may increase your
chances a bit in certain cases.

As far as I am aware, when your girlfriend arrives at London/Heathrow, she
merely has to state how long she is staying and then prove that she has
enough funds for the length of stay. The officer will then permit her length
of stay as long as she can prove intent to leave (proof of home ownership,
job, etc.) and enough funds to support herself.

She could also apply for a Visa in the US before traveling to ensure a
smooth entry in London.

The newsgroup misc.immigration.misc handles quite a bit of UK related
immigration questions.
