Default UK-based application: NIS statement question

Has anyone been through the process recently of acquiring a "statement
from the National Identification Service" as part of their immigrant visa
process? (the wording's rather vague, so I'm not sure if that's an
official title or not!)

I just received the package from the US embassy in the UK in connection
with my K1 application - although the main package still asks for a Police
Certificate, there's a separate sheet saying that Standard and
Enhanced Disclosure certificates are no longer any good in the UK /
Ireland (doesn't say why), and that a statement from the NIS is needed
instead; it would seem the loose sheet supercedes the info in the stapled
pages.

Unfortunately they only give a postal address for the NIS - no website or
phone number information. I'll do some googling tomorrow and see if I can
find a more convenient way of getting hold of them. In the meantime I'm
just curious how much it costs though (compared to a Police Certificate),
how long it takes, what (if any) other documents they need etc.

I went in to my local city police station earlier and showed them the
info I'd been given - they'd never heard of such a thing and could only
help with normal police certificates.

Looks like it might be a new policy change on the USCIS side, but quite
how new I don't know.

cheers

Jules, I haven't heard of this requirement from other posters, but thought I'd tip you that if this is for a visa application, it will be a Dept of State requirement, not USCIS.
travel.state.gov if you want to hunt around under Immigrant Visas.

Yes, I wasn't sure if I was right in assuming it was USCIS' fault ;-)

I got tied up with work stuff today so didn't get a chance to talk to the
NIS lot, but should be able to tomorrow. Will report back if there's
anything to say (such as NIS saying: "what are you talking about? We don't
know anything about this"!)

ps. thanks for the reply to my post a few weeks back about what happens
following I-129F approval - I never did get around to replying to your
post directly!

cheers

Applicants applying for a visa at the Embassy in London or the Consulate General in Belfast are required to furnish a Subject Access Statement from the National Identification Service (NIS). The NIS is operated by the Metropolitan Police Service on behalf of all UK forces. The application form and further information is available from their website at http://www.met.police.uk/dataprotection/forms.htm . The Subject Access Form that you are required to complete is the Police National Computer Form (Form 3019B).

Residents of the Metropolitan area (most of London) should submit their request to the Metropolitan Police. Residents outside this area, should subject their request to their local police service. The Metropolitan Police Service website can assist you in locating the individual police services throughout the United Kingdom. Residents of Northern Ireland should subject their request to the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Further information is available from http://www.met.police.uk/dataprotection/forms.htm .

NOTE: The NIS must have been issued less than 6 months before your scheduled appointment date. If the statement was issued prior to this you will need to obtain an updated statement BEFORE attending your interview.

Please note that a Basic Disclosure from Disclosure Scotland (part of the Scottish Criminal Record Office) is NOT acceptable.

Thanks - that's a huge amount more helpful than the few lines of text that
the embassy sent to me! Given that the embassy website seems to be up to
date, it's strange how they're a bit vague about this part in the written
communication - the rest of the information that they sent is pretty
comprehensive.
