Tricky ILR Timing!
Hi all,
I'm hoping to see clarification on ILR rules, or at least a bit of guidance of whether it's worth paying for specialist advice/guidance!
I first entered the UK on a student visa in 2010. In 2013, I switched to a Tier 2 general work visa sponsored by my current employer. I'm nearing my 5 year years eligibility to apply for ILR, but am also about to receive a job offer by an employer that can't sponsor, and whom would like to me start as soon as possible.
What I'm trying to figure out is the following:
1. As I was already in the country and merely switched visas in 2010, does the "clock" begin when I got my certificate of sponsorship (May) or my biometric permit (June)?
2. When you apply for ILR, it says that you will need an additional letter from your currently employer verifying your continued employment. Do you know if they will check with the employer? Is there a 28 day rule as with other documents? (Here I am trying to figure out if I need to wait to hand in my notice and/or get it in advance).
3. I read on that I can apply 28 days in advance (e.g. 4 years and 11 months on the Tier 2) - is that true for the premium speedy application?
Thoughts on any of the above welcome! Thanks!

Re: Tricky ILR Timing!
1. It'll be when your visa was granted; in this case the validity start date on your first Tier 2 visa/BRP.
2. Your employer will need to provide a letter confirming your ongoing employment and the Home Office is liable to check. It's certainly not something you want to chance and blow your ILR at the final hurdle. You can give notice after you receive your ILR but not before.
3. You can apply up to 28 days in advance including when using the premium service. If you're that keen to start with a new employer then paying extra for the same day service is probably a good idea.
