Post Scanning Documents - what needs certifying?

Hi, I'm applying for UK spouse visa, and cannot figure out how the scanning service works.

It's great that they return every document except for passports at the time of application, but I'm confused as to if every document now needs to be certified despite I can submit the original? otherwise, how do they know what's original after the documents have been scanned? Do they just check as I scan at the Visa centre? (Hard to believe they spend time on checking every page of passport copy is as original at the visa centre.)

I also have A3 my graduation certificate, and VFS asks every non-A4 document to be reformatted to fit A4, does this also need certified? (and can they certify as it is technically modified...?)

Anyone with experience in (or knowledge of) scanning service, I'd really appreciate it if you could tell me what they are expecting...

Thanks in advance!
