Default planning to move to the UK... advice?

I am planning to move to the UK late this year.

I currently live in Brisbane, Australia.

I have found out so far that I can get UK citizenship (born in 82 and my mother is English), so from there I can get a UK passport. I am getting married in march, so I think my wife to be can get a Visa based on being married to a UK citizen?

I have a place lined up to stay in... a friend lives in Bath, and said we can stay at his house for a few months till we get on our feet.

I'm not sure whether I should stay in Bath or look for work in London. I work as asp/VB.net application developer. My partner works in a government admin role.

I have friends over there who seem to be pulling big salaries with no problem. I was thinking I could look for contract work over there?

What surprises am I in for moving to the UK?

I've heard rent is quite exy, and I probably won't need a car to get around.

Any advice people can give would be great!

Correct. See http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk

After 3 years your wife can become naturalised British. Strongly recommended as this will allow any Australia born children you have in future to be British too (you will be British "by descent" so will face restrictions on passing on your citizenship).

Quick piece of advice. By all means stay with your friend when you arrive, but better make it a few weeks rather than a few months.

And there are other parts of the United Kingdom : eg Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Edinburgh etc.

You can do without a car in London yes, elsewhere it may be more of an issue.

I'll probably only stay with my friend until I find work bit unfair to stay for very long.

As for the car......distances are shorter than in Australia, but it's still a pretty big place. You'll still do good to get one especially if you want to explore different areas. It can be cold and wet too...no fun standing at the bus stop then You'll be more independent from your friend also.

Good Luck
