Default Child born in UK or overseas?

Hi, could anyone tell me what the advantages would be to my child being born in the UK as apposed to my home country with regards to citizenship etc?

Is there any difference, my husband being British born and raised and myself being form Thailand. Would the child's status be any different? I keep reading about British by descent etc but I'm a little confused with it all.

Thanks in adance for any advice.

Being born in the UK would give your child British citizenship otherwise than by descent meaning your grandchildren would be automatically British regardless of where they were born. Being born in Thailand would give your child British citizenship by descent meaning they would usually be unable to pass on their citizenship automatically if your grandchildren were born outside the UK. In addition Thailand is considered a very high risk country for passport fraud so you may be waiting up to a year for a passport to be issued if your child was born in Thailand.

If the OP is planning to give birth in the UK, I would suggest her to go and give birth in Northern Ireland (Belfast for example). A child born in the Island of Ireland (including Northern Ireland) with at lease one British Citizen parent is entitle to Irish Citizenship as well. Having Irish Citizenship will entitle the child to have freedom of movement in the EU - a very useful thing to have after Brexit.
