British passport for child born outwith UK
Can anybody clarify for me whether when applying for a first British passport for a child born outside UK you need to submit the child's passport?
Looking at the website 'supporting documents' to me it looks like you do, but a friend in Australia with half-British kids has literally just gone through the process and insists she only needed to send photocopies.
We are keen to get our 4 year old a UK passport but there is no way we can be without her only (Australian) passport for the posted timeline of 6 weeks!
Anybody been through the process? Am I misinterpreting the rules?
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

This is what the UK website says Im assuming the child is under 15 and born in Australia.
How to apply
You must apply and pay for your passport online.
Before you start you need:
the passport numbers of both parents and their dates and place of birth, and in some cases the same details of grandparents
2 identical new photos of you (or your child, if it’s a child passport application)
any other current passports issued by other countries
a MasterCard, Visa, Visa Electron, Visa Debit or Maestro (UK Domestic) card - Maestro (International) cards aren’t accepted

Although maybe I'm getting confused with the wording and it's one of the parents passports we need to provide?
I'm just confused as to why there would be a difference - she is def. not making it up as they were travelling while they were was being processed. Her kids also born in Australia but only one parent is British.
Don't know why they can't just accept notarized copies

https://www.gov.uk/government/upload..._Gp1_09.15.PDF
It says "full colour copy...." under the 'supporting documents' list.
In the guide it says https://www.gov.uk/government/upload...otes_09.15.PDF
If you are a dual national, you should send us a full
colour photocopy of the uncancelled non-British
passport, or British Overseas Territories Citizen
passport (every page including blank pages).

As she was born outside the UK (in Australia) it then says see table B - parents or adoptive parents documents, and there it says please provide the following 'The passport you entered the country from which you are applying'. No mention there of it being a copy

I believe from what I have read online that if you hold a British Passport they are able to check the details.
Have you filled out the forms online? It should give you a detailed list of what supporting documents you need as well.. what does it say on there?
Personally, I would send colour photocopies and a note to state that you have not sent your original passports but can make them available if necessary.

Please send us a colour photocopy of your non-British passport (every page including blank pages). We retain the right to ask for the original passport. We will let you know by email or post if we need you to send it to us.
Personally I wouldn't bother with every page, just the bio-data page.

Send photocopies. In the unlikely event of being called for interview then take originals along.

It doesn't say original either

Haven't started the application yet - we had been holding off doing anything because we thought we had to send originals.
Sounds like best thing is just to send the copies and hopefully they are happy with that.
Thanks everyone.
