Question Am I Eligible For British Citizenship / Am I A Citizen?

Hello,

I was born at the U.S.A.F. Hospital in R.A.F. Lakenheath to American Parents in 1992. I have both a U.S. birth certificate and a British Certificate of Birth. Am I considered a British Citizen and/or am I eligible for a British passport in any way? I am trying to find a job in the UK and it would make the process much easier if I were not to require sponsorship.

I'm afraid that the answer is probably no.

Where were your grandparents born?

My grandparents were all American. Even with a British Birth Certificate and being born in England?

Birthright citizenship is now rare outside the Americas. The UK changed its citizenship law on 1 January 1983. Birth in the UK after this date only conferred British citizenship if one of your parents was themselves a British citizen or was 'settled' (held permanent legal residence) in the UK. As your parents would have been exempt from immigration control as posted military personnel this wouldn't apply to you unless they had inherited British or Irish citizenship from one of their parents. If both your parents and all four grandparents were born in the US I'm afraid you are very unlikely to have a claim to British citizenship.

A great-grandparent born in certain European countries may entitle you to an EU/EEA passport which would remove the need for a visa but otherwise you will need to be sponsored by an employer.
