Teaching in China - help please
Hi there, I have just been offered a position with a well known group in China and wondered if anyone had any advice about taking a job there. I have heard some real horror stories but the working group that are considering me seem to be too good to be true? Any advice would be wonderful to hear.
Thanks

Hi there. Just to say Welcome to the forum I'm not in China so I'll leave our China residents to answer your question. Which part of China are you thinking of moving to? That may help those on here.

It is Nanjing and intend to go there as I am a teacher. I just worry that there are problems that I am not aware of and wondered if anyone had any experience as it sounds too perfect, I know nothing ever really is, of course.

Thank you for the link, it is appreciated. Who has moved there based on a job and been totally horrified about what they saw? Has anyone heard anything bad about some of the schools, contracts ended too soon and how you are observed?

Re: Teaching in China - help please
Hey, I recently moved to Shenzhen in February to teach out here. I didn't know much about my agent she was recomended by a friend living here... who I have seen once since coming to China. My agent is unorganised and takes a large cut of our wage from the schools, which in my opinion she does not deserve given the lack of help we've recieved.
Getting a job here was quick, but I am not happy where I am, you definately need to make sure there are other foreigners where you work. At my school there is only me and a Chinese teacher that can half speak English. Whereas at my partners school he has around 6 Foreign teachers and almost all the Chinese teachers speak fluent or some English.
Parents and the Principle will want to watch your lesson after around a month or two of teaching there.
Hope this helped.

Teaching in china is all good and all... but you don't benefit from it in the future, why not try and get a totally different job?
Im in china and teaching is the last thing i would do....
You can do much better then simply 'teach' - Remember your English is an advantage. - thank's to my wife who told me NOT TO TEACH because in some Chinese eyes it's consider a loser.
no offense lol

Re: Teaching in China - help please
Another loser (sorry, Vexcore) hmm .... teacher here. A PhD to boot, which is probably seen similarly in his (her ?) warped cultural vision.
I have had a couple of positive responses - actually one from Shenzhen, where caseyt is, and I have similar concerns to him(her).
It seems quite possible that there are going to be a lot of schools where you are, literally, the sole foreigner - not Brit, white man, etc. but just the one foreign person on board.
Anyone else had experiences with this and all it entails ?
