Exclamation One way ticket to Hong Kong

Hi there!

I will be moving to HK from South Africa (but have a British passport). I have a company who is sponsoring the visa, and will receive the work visa once I land in Hong Kong. But, I need to know if I can leave on my British passport on a one-way ticket, or if I need to have a return ticket?

Thank you!

Hi and wlecome. Hopefully someone here will know the answer, if not I guess you will need to call the airline and ask them the question.

I like you have moved around the world for work. Many times on my british passport on a one way ticket. I think the problem now is all about terrorism - so if you had a one way ticket to Iraq or Iran it might be a different story. We flew from UK to Cyprus like many other expats on a one way ticket.

Thank you for replying! So do you think I would be able to get into HK one a one-way ticket? I have my contract for work with me, just not my visa yet.

I haven't chosen my airline yet: between Etihad, Emirates, and Cathay. Honestly, whom ever is going to give me less trouble.

Cathay Pacific flies from Johannesburg to Hong Kong direct everyday. Please see sample timetable from the link below -

A number of points which you need to be aware of -

1) Housing cost in Hong Kong is very high, does your pay package offers a separate housing allowance?

2) You may wish to open a bank account with Hang Seng Bank (has one of the biggest branch network in Hong Kong) in Hong Kong, it offers customers to deposit and withdraw foreign currency banknotes including the South African Rand (up to ZAR 500 per day) and Pound Sterling (£1000 per day) from their bank accounts. See link (Useful Information on the right hand side/ service charges/section B page 9) below -

Integrated Account - Hang Seng Banking Services

3) You can apply for a full Hong Kong driving licence using your South African driving licence.

Have you confirmed that a one way ticket will give you any advantages (of importance to you) over a return ticket?

Ah but do remember Cyprus is an EU country so UK citizens have the entitlement of freedom of movement there, so there was no visa issue. That is not the case for HK.

Is this common practice? It sounds very odd.

Well, my contract is for 12 months, so I am not going to be needing to fly back to South Africa anytime soon.
