Moving to Hong Kong in Feb 2008
Hi,
I am moving to HK in Feb this year and I have a few questions. First of all I am moving with my partner who has a job in Central. However I have yet to gain employment. Will I need a visa initially? If not, someone said I would have to show a return ticket rather than a one way?? Is this true??

Chances of being asked for a return ticket are slim and as a British passport holder you can get 180 days as a visitor.

In HK, you need an employment visa which is sponsored by an employer - so it's necessary to find a job and sponsor first. Alternatively, if you are married and your other half has an employment visa you can get a dependent's visa; you can work with one of those and don't need to apply for an employment one. The HK government does not recognise "common law" marriages or unmarried partners for dependent visa. But as the previous poster mentions you can visit HK for 180 days and, although not legal, you can look for a job then (loads of people do that).
