moving to Mexico city
Hello,
My partner and I are moving to Mexico City in Aug' '14. She is taking up a post as a head teacher and I will be completing my Open University degree.
Has anyone got any tips on
a) Renting a house
b) long term car rental/buying a car
c) The Alvaro Obregon area
d) Whether I should just use a tourist visa or is it worth me getting a different visa. Can I get a mobile phone/bank account/ with a tourist visa? Can I drive a car with uk licence for an extended period? We are going for 3 years
Would appreciate any informed thoughts on the above or anything else relevant.
Thanks
Paul

Re: moving to Mexico city
Hi Paul, renting a house will require, usually, 1 months deposit in advance, a Fiador (guarantor with a property in Mexico City), proof of legal residence in Mexico.
Secondhand cars are more expensive than in the UK. Check out www.segundamano.com.mx - this website also lists properties.
In which Colonia are you thinking of renting in Alvaro Obregon?
You cannot get a bank account with a tourist visa - a temporary residence visa is a minimum requirement. A cellphone is not a problem. I believe that you can drive a car - not sure about extended period though. Once you have a temporary residence visa, you can then get a Mexican driving licence, no test required (costs around $600 pesos for 3 years).
