Smile Volunteer visa

Hi, I am hoping to travel with a group of Canadians to volunteer in Tijuana for 1 week. I will be the only British passport holder on the trip.

The gov.uk website says that I need a visa for voluntary/humanitarian work.

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-ad...y-requirements

But the Mexican consul website says that I do not need a visa for volunteer work so long as it is not paid work.

https://consulmex.sre.gob.mx/reinoun...r-carnet-visa-

We will be travelling by road via the US.

Please advise - do I need a special visa or not?

Thanks so much in advance.

Voluntary worker VISA

According to Mexican Immigration Law which came into force on 9 November 2012, British and EU nationals who are going to undertake the following “Activities Non Remunerated” in Mexico for less than six months are exempt of Visa: the beginning or execution of an investment project, to perform professional practices, voluntary work, internship, to give technical or professional advice to public or private institutions, lectures, courses or training of staff, to perform an audit, repair or install machinery and software, to design or start the operation of a plant agreed previously on contracts, or to give services agreed on transfer’s contracts of technology, patents or marks. Simply they must fill in a FMM migration form (landing card) obtained on the airplane or at the port of entry in Mexico and declare the purpose of their visit.

Thanks for the response. That's what I gathered from the information on the Mexican site. It just caused me concern that the British embassy travel advice was contradictory. Not sure why? Will go with the Mexican advice and hope that it is up to date!! Thanks so much.

You were probably not only the only British passport holder on your trip, but as I've been in Tijuana (and before that Juarez) about a month now, judging from the way people treat me like an "American' (i.e. 'walking ATM machine" and purse there for anyone to snatch off my shoulders in broad daylight in the middle of a busy street) probably the only British or Irish passport holder in all of northern Mexico. That's what it feels like!! The minute I start speaking English it's presumed I must be a Yank and I get treated accordingly!! The UK did it too - I'm actually IRISH, so surprised I'm even on this forum, but it was the closest thing I could find to "English-speaking but not American" when I googled that. There's a British consulate in Tijuana but not an Irish one, probably FOR. A. REASON.
