Being a foreigner, you´ll find that probably the only area suitable for you will be the “Barra da Tijuca, which has a 22 kilometre beach and is self-contained, with large shopping malls, etc. The residential parts of this area are made up of closed condominiums which are tightly guarded and have complete infrastructure.. with playgrounds, tennis courts, swimming pools and barbeque areas, etc.
Here are some links for schools:

You´ll be ok if you follow the basic rules of personal security:
- when driving, never stop at a red traffic light after 10pm,
- never, ever flash money or any other signs of wealth,
- keep out of dubious areas,
- don´t walk in deserted areas,
- never, ever, react if you get mugged,
- keep as low a profile as possible, stick to simple T-shirts and jeans, whenever possible..
If you´re American, you´ll find that anti-americanism is riding high here, however, people here can´t really help it, they´re being brainwashed into it…
Just PM me if you need more info....
