Tax in Trinidad and Tobago
I have applied for a job with a British company carrying out a contract for the Trinidad government and would like to know how much tax I will be paying?
Also I keep hearing horror stories about the crime rates there but it surely can't be that bad?! If I get the job my wife and 6 month old son will be moving with me so any advice will be welcome.

Re: Tax in Trinidad and Tobago
Hi Chibs,
Welcome to T&T! I'm not an expat but a local living here so I can't advise as to the tax system for British Expats. Perhaps you can call the British High Commission in Port-of-Spain 1-868-662-2748 for further information.
As for the crime here, there are several ways I could categorize the crime here: (1) Crime you will experience if you're into crime yourself
(2)Crime towards people with businesses
(3)Personal / domestic disputes
(4) The innocent local
(5) Crime toward expats
A lot of the crime is from (1) to (3) I fall into (4) and it seems to be almost invisible to me most of the time. There have been break-ins in the townhouse next to me and in my neighborhood. The innocent do have to look out for theft therefore and if you are a woman walking alone - rape which is known to happen though not yet at frightening levels. For the innocent, the crime here is like this: it either hits you or it is almost invisible (or you will hear about it/read about it)
We are also seeing an increase in drive-by shootings of locals and it has been known to happen in Upscale areas as well.
Category 5 is where you would fall in and to be honest, crime towards expats is something that I haven't heard that much of as most expats quickly get vehicles and live in gated communities. Expats also tend to hang out with the upper middle class Trinidadians who live nearby. There have been cases of theft from British tourists and a few murders of foreigners but none in the last few years. An American group was walking along the Western Main Road and reported being attacked last year but apart from those cases, most of the thousands of expats working in the Petroleum and Petrochemical sector seem ok. Take precautions as per usual.
