moving to caribbean islands
Hello,
We are a Colombian young (26) couple and we are interested in moving to a caribbean island in order to continue our postgraduate studies in economics and psichology.
We have only seen the UWI university at Barbados and we have some questions:
1) How easy is to get a student job (which is the average wage for this kind of job) and which kind of job are offered?
2) How much does it cost a rent of a little apartment for a couple, near of the beach and not necessary in the city of Bridgestown?
3) Does anyone knows about UWI... is it in Bridgetown? how big is it? what distance is it from the beach?
4) Which percentage of white people this island has?
5) Is there another city with a big university
6) Average Humidity?
7) Does anyone recommend us another island for students, we are interested in living near the beach.
This information will be very usefull for our future.
Thanks and good luck

Ok, I live in Barbados so here are the answers to your questions:
1. You will not be allowed to work while staying in Barbados as a student. However, it is possible to pick up a job in restaurant for cash. Expect to earn about US$300 a week, including tips.
2. You could rent an apartment for US$400 to US$500 per month. The closer you get to the beach, the higher the rent. Apartments on the beach are about US$3000 per month.
3. UWI is about 5km from Bridgetown and about 1km to the beach. I think UWI has about 6000 students. They are building lots of new facilities at UWI Cave Hill.
4. Offically, about 5% of the population is white, and about 5% mixed, and 90% black. There are also a large number of expats who have second homes in Barbados and of course in any given week, there are about 10000 tourists, most of whom are white. Generally speaking, there are few racial issues here in Barbados and black and white tend to get along.
5. There is only one university in Barbados.
6. The temperature year around in about 30C, a few degrees cooler in December to April, a few degrees warmer in June to October. Humidity is high all year (70 to 90%)
7. UWI has campuses in Trinidad and Jamaica, but there is a problem in these two islands with crime and safety. Grenada has a univeristy, St. Georges University. www.sgu.edu
Barbados is quite small, so most things are close to the beach. The bus system works well so its easy to get around. The island is also quite safe with low levels of crime.
Hope this information helps.

Well, when you come here to study, immigration will want to make sure that you have enough money to cover your expenses while you are here, including tuition, rent, food, and other expenses. They will not allow you to finance part of your costs here through a job. Unemployment has been traditionally very high here so government makes it difficult for non-residents to work. Even if you marry a Barbadian, it can take up to two years to get your status and be allowed to work legally.
