Dominican Republic Questions
Hi all, This is my first time to this site so please bear with me...
Were a family of 5, me, my hubby and children age 16, 13, and 9.
We have had several holidays in Dominican republic once to the south side all the rest to the north. We love Dom Rep.
We really do want to move there hopefully about june time next year and i have been doing lots of research on the internet that's how i came across this site.
I would like to hear from you all that live there to help us with the final decision.
I would like your input on the following...
1) my husband has his own Re-Upholstery business here in the uk and would like to start his upholstery business there. recovering sofas dining chairs etc.
How would he go about starting his business out there, is there a call for this sort of business.
I would work doing whatever at present i am a health care assistant in the ER.
2) Any useful sites with information on how to go about the process for visas work permits immigration and living there etc
3) were looking at sosua area with the children in an English school my eldest son is just going into grade 11 here so would he still have to do yr 12 there.
4) what is the health care system like
Any information would be great and websites you can refer us too.
Many thanks

Re: Dominican Republic Questions
Hopefully not too late on this.
Afraid I've only been to Puerto Plata once, more familiar with the southern side of the Island. But I have had some thorough experience of their health care system. Well, it was private. Their standards are way below what would ever be acceptable in the Canada I am sure. even though this particular hospital was owned by a Spanish company. It had pretty terminal effects in the end. However, via a private doctor and complicated surgery there has been more success. When you're surgeon starts talking about god you know you're not in the greatest care.
All in all, though it can be a bit frantic and strange goings on, I wouldnt' object living there myself. Just be careful, perhaps more so around the Santo Domingo area in terms of crime, etc. I've been going there for the past 6-7 years if not more to visit family there.
There is an international school somewhere in the San Padro de Macoris area which I'm familiar with. This is a relatively calm area as well, though it gets invaded with city dwellers every weekend, and there's a few hotels though not as popular with the tourists as the Puerto Plata and the eastern part of the island. Just be aware of drunk drivers friday/saturday..it seems to be a bit of a sport. Merengue and the effects of binging on Brugal.
