I think he should take a trip to the DTES in Vancouver and some of the not so nice areas of the suburbs to wipe the rose tint away

Nor any areas I have lived 4-5 years ago, albeit Bath and the Cotswolds.

Earlier on the trip, in east London, another man, black and highly muscled, the violence in his eyes reflected by the LONSDALE LONDON written on the remnants of his now sleeveless shirt, approached me.
"Excuse me Sir, do you know if this train stops at East Croydon?" he said.
I thought of Derek and Clive.

You just identified your error. In one breath you mention 'dear old england' and imply that all of it is like your particular shithole corner of London.

Homicide is a poor way of comparing crime rates, especially in Alberta as Edmonton has far more than Calgary does.
The day-to-day crimes that affect us the most are property crimes.
But anyway the first thing that came up in Google was: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...frica-U-S.html
Whenever I'm thinking of moving somewhere the first thing I do is go to the local police station and talk to the local crime prevention officer, there is little doubt in my mind that where I live now is safer than anywhere I ever lived in the UK based on those conversations, which are admittedly subjective.

If you like watching documentaries. I actually disagree, some of the documentaries they have on PBS are better, the Ken Burns' documentaries are amazingly good, they're better than anything I've ever seen in the UK.

Better than Mr. Attenborough's. Surely not

I know where you're coming from. I saw Harry Brown. That's not the Britain I'd want to fetch my kids up in. They got no chance these days, poor little bastards. Truth be told, I blame Jack Straw.
