I lived in both East and South West London and don't recognize it either. That said, he must live in a shithole.

I think he should take a trip to the DTES in Vancouver and some of the not so nice areas of the suburbs to wipe the rose tint away

Very little is any of what Julius reports to be found there it seems.
Nor any areas I have lived 4-5 years ago, albeit Bath and the Cotswolds.

We stayed at that Hilton by Edgware Road tube earlier this year. That's west London. We took a bus far west. Turnham Green! I saw several black men over there, they could have been from Somalia. They could also have been stoned but I see that every day here and so wouldn't notice.

Earlier on the trip, in east London, another man, black and highly muscled, the violence in his eyes reflected by the LONSDALE LONDON written on the remnants of his now sleeveless shirt, approached me.

"Excuse me Sir, do you know if this train stops at East Croydon?" he said.

I thought of Derek and Clive.

Mate, Youngs (our local brewery) are pretty bloody good now regarding food.

But you are looking to move to Canada (again) to escape these perceived issues, when there are places a lot closer to home that you could try. Doesnt have to be Beds, my brother in Surrey, 30 mins from the city, also wouldnt recognise your description. Of course, thats not a cheap place to live, but then neither is Vancouver either.

FWIW many of my old mans neighbours commute the 1hr to London daily

You just identified your error. In one breath you mention 'dear old england' and imply that all of it is like your particular shithole corner of London.

Whenever I'm thinking of moving somewhere the first thing I do is go to the local police station and talk to the local crime prevention officer, there is little doubt in my mind that where I live now is safer than anywhere I ever lived in the UK based on those conversations, which are admittedly subjective.

If you like watching documentaries. I actually disagree, some of the documentaries they have on PBS are better, the Ken Burns' documentaries are amazingly good, they're better than anything I've ever seen in the UK.

I know where you're coming from. I saw Harry Brown. That's not the Britain I'd want to fetch my kids up in. They got no chance these days, poor little bastards. Truth be told, I blame Jack Straw.
