Re: Winnipeg
its just a nickname, i lived there for 8 years, Edmonton where i am not gets more snow & was one night a couple of years ago crowned the coldest city on earth just for one night.
Winnipeg gets cold but not as much snow as say Toronto which gets dumped on due to the "lake effect" In Alberta it gets just as cold but they have a warm wind that sometimes comes over the rockies to give some relief to the cold.
As for where to live, avoid the down town area and if you where to draw a line on the map of winnipeg due north from down town then another going north west then the area in between those line is called "Northend" DO NOT go there lol You will find property in both those areas is very cheap & theres a reason for it !
I lived in Transcona which is the east to north east side and no issue, i also had an apartment near the mint right in the corner of the perimeter & the trans Canada Highway No issues there either.
Winnipeg is no worse than any other cities, there are areas in all cities you probably wouldn't want to live. A good guide is if the property is crazy cheap then likely its a bad area :}
There is plenty of new houses in winnipeg if you can afford one. And also new Condo's

Re: Winnipeg
Winnipeg is a sh*t hole- no offence to anyone who lives there, but it is.
It reminds me of I am Legend when it gets dark- all the undesirables come out.

Thats the same in most cities, the undesirables come out at night, any city in any country has the same issue, thats why a lot of brits i know settled out in the country here.

No argument there is less snow, don't want to haul ass on roads that have potholes like sinkholes though..

Re: Winnipeg
Don't know where you are emigrating from (ie big city/little town etc) but we came across from Melbourne so to us it is quite a compact city in comparison. The reduced commute to work is a bonus for us. My husband is literally 4 minutes drive from work (compared with an hour and 1/2 each way previously).
Just make sure you have the right winter gear and get somewhere with indoor parking and it's all good.

Ignoring the cold winter, there is a bright side to Winnipeg - the summer is lovely when it does get here (and you appreciate it so much more) and there is plenty of things for families to do. Loads of parks, play areas and splash pads/outdoor pools. Outdoor rinks in the winter if you like skating (if you don't learn to ) My little one (3 & 1/2)loves the snow.

Common sense stuff like dont use an ATM (cashpoint) if someone is hanging around (specially aboriginal indians)
