Default Vancouver info please - schools life etc

Hello all, Hubby has just found out that he will be working over in Vancouver and we are currently in the uk. We have two children 3 and 5. His company will be based in downtown Van. Just wondering if there is anyone out there who has any tips on recommended good schools whether public, montessori ? locally and not too much of a commute. So many things to research into - houses - may start in a small 2 bed in town and thinking of being a little further out once finding our feet . should we be near the sky train etc.
Are there reasonably prices houses in Vancouver ?

Any tips and help much appreciated.

People tend not to stress out so much about schools here. Most are quite content to send their kids to the local public (i.e. state) school. I usually suggest that you choose a neighborhood where you think you will be comfortable living and there is a very good chance that your kids will enjoy and fit in the local school.

Kids enter the school system in September of the year in which they turn six so your oldest will likely go to school. Pre-school is all private but there seems to be many Montessori type places around. Unfortunately I can't help with recommendations downtown.

If you don't know Vancouver at all my recommendation is to choose a very short-term option to start with. A holiday let or a suite at a moderately priced motel. Give yourselves a few days to explore a few neighborhoods and suburbs. Most residential lets are one year minimum so pick an area you think you will be happy in.

You will possibly change your mind as you get to know the city and its suburbs. Buying and selling homes is expensive so, if you are looking to buy, spend this year getting to know Vancouver so when the time comes you can make an informed choice.

It depends. There is more competition to find rentals near a SkyTrain and accommodation tends to be more compact and denser. However, it can be convenient for commuting and if you plan to live with only one, or no, cars.

Ha! Compared to Central London, yes. Compared to just about anywhere else, no. It tends to be cheaper the further from downtown you get.
