Hi guys,

I have a full bike licence here in the UK, when we move over to Ontario I assume that i will not have to take any further tests over there ?

Unfortunately you will. I was / am currently in the same position. My UK bike licence is not recognized here in Ontario. Quite strange why they 'swap' your car licence but not bike.

I'm confused.. Aviator's link suggests that provided you have ridden on a full UK licence for two years, it is a straight swap. What am I missing?

If you have been legally driving a regular motorcycle for two or more years, you will receive a regular Class M licence with no conditions.

Talking to the manager and showing them the document from the licensing authority should help. Assuming you still have proof of having held a MC license in the UK.

Yes you are missing something! That whole web page is in the context of 'if your country has a reciprocal agreement'. Scroll down, no mention of the UK anywhere (bizzarely apart from N Ireland!).

So AIUI, there is NO licence swap from UK motorbikes. I would be delighted to be wrong as I am in the same situation!

That is bonkers- Part of the UK but only N.I..... I was missing the stamina to read the whole of the link. We don't have that problem in this little piece of paradise, the reciprocal agreement extends to all parts the of British realm

The Alberta website shows NI having a reciprocal agreement for Class 6 but England, Scotland and Wales only having Class 5:

I wasn't aware of this until this thread. Yet another thing to do and another expense! It's not easy this Canadian emigration lark!

I was unable to exchange mine and am currently riding on an M2 licence

FWIW it's quite easy to get a bike licence in Ontario, and if you do a rider training course the insurance isn't too harsh.

What you need to do is find someone new to the job that just swaps stuff over failing that, in AB it's just a Mon to Fri eve course followed by the test on Saturday and your good to go, OH did it a few years ago.

OH has gone out for a couple of hours - if I go for a burn for an hour then come back and rush around looking like I've been busy the whole time he's been gone, do you think he'll notice???

Not necessarily. When I did it, it was a 3 hour in class lesson one evening, followed by 2 days of riding Saturday and Sunday with the test taken at the end.

OK in Red Deer the guys that ran the course when my OH did it, it was 5 nights riding followed by the test - I was just highlighting how easy it is and then you can go a get a hyabusa and die I personally think that is crazy stuff.
