Unhappy TWP flying to Calgary and child with sever eczema

hi
Apologies if I have posted in the wrong forum.

We are due to fly out to Calgary on TWP. My son who is 8 has sever eczema. In the UK he has steroid creams and wet Zip Zoc bandages and a stretchy skin tone bandage which covers both the lengths of his arms and legs. I have stuffed a suitcase with enough medicine to last him for 1 month, but I am worried about getting registered with a family doctor, and if the doctors in Calgary can prescribe him something similar to his medication here in the UK. Is there anyone who has any advice please.

Thanks a worried mother

Find a Doctor | Programs & Services | Alberta Health Services

It would be useful, IMO, to bring a copy of his UK GP records and prescription for his treatments.

There are plenty of walk in clinics as well. Hopefully your OH has extended health from work, otherwise medications are PAYG here.

There is a Calgary specific website for people looking for family doctors taking new patients.

If you're going to be living in the south, Pinnacle Medical near the Co-op on MacLeod are taking new patients. Our doctor there is Dr Bruno and is very down to earth. They give you a meet and greet beforehand anyway so you can see of you like them.

If it doesn't kick in for 3 months bring as much as you can.

Don't worry about them not having something similar here - they will have. You'll be shocked at the drug aisles - they are huge (I found) compared to the UK.

Like someone else said you can always go to a walk in if you don't get a family doctor.

This may also be useful (TWP holders, in some cases, are apparently eligible for AHCIP):

Temporary residents and AHCIP Alberta Health

funny! He's actually an Italian ER doc who tells it like it is and if you don't like it invited us to find another doc. I really liked him as he was straight up but others might like a more molly coddling doc. I think it's because he's an ER doc so not much time for niceties. He's is lovely though (we think anyway but we were both in the Navy so are used to a different 'touch' lol). There are other doctors at the surgery though if you want a gentler approach.

PS funny to Haggis! We haven't got medical insurance yet and need heart medication and to be honest found it quite cheap at Costco, certainly not as expensive as we thougt. Costco is the place to go though as they are the cheapest.
