Default Setting Up in Canada - Home Electricals Bulk Discount?

Hi there,

So, we're getting ready for the big move in March. All of our paperwork in place, our UK home up for rental and scouring Kijiji on a daily basis for our (temporary) new home in Canada.

One question for this awesome community...

I'm conscious that when we land in Canada, we're going to need to stock our new home with a bunch of new electricals - white goods, like wahsing machine/dryer as well as new TVs and so on (we're selling all of our UK kit and buying new at the other end).

I was wondering whether Canadian retailers would be likely to offer some kind of discount for a fair sized purchase of electrical goods? Is it customary to ask for some kind of deal in Canada? For those of you now settled in Canada, how did you approach this?

Many thanks!
Terry

If you are renting then the white goods will likely be included.

Lots of places do deals on appliance packages.

Thanks Siouxie :-)

Standard (advertised) deals, or ones to negotiate directly, face to face?

whether you rent or buy white goods are normally included here.
I have a friend in MB who bought 5 bed place, He walked into the Brick in Winnipeg and said " i need to furnish a 5 bed home, i need everything, but i dont want to pay any tax or delivery charge" The sales woman checked with the manager and he agreed, that geordy bugger got what he wanted lol so its very possible.

We did a similar thing when we landed in Canada. We went to Future Shop (where I believe they are very much on commission) and said we're looking for a bundle of stuff - a big(ish) TV, Freezer, PVR, DVD player, iron, slow cooker, waffle maker, stereo amp thing. I can't remember what the discount was we actually got, but we went home to compare online before committing and we couldn't get the same stuff cheaper anywhere else. They also delivered it all for free (I think).

As it was The Brick, they will have still made about 40% profit....

Don't buy anything from there unless you can't afford to pay for it up front.

As others have said, rentals will come with all white goods apart from possibly the microwave. Over-the hob microwaves will probably be there in slightly older places - those are less common in newer ones.

We rented a brand new house and all white goods were included.

There are often the best deals at specialist appliance stores during promo periods. We just kitted out a new kitchen, got 20% off on sale. Ended up going to three stores to get everything what we wanted. Electricals I'll buy from Costco if I can, best warranty and return policies. The dishwasher we ended up getting a European one with nearly 50% off with a sale and rebates.

What is wrong with the Brick?

I only ask as they are only the game in town for furniture and the couch we bought from them has been good, and was made in Canada as well. We paid in full 498 before taxes and delivery.

I'll just mention apartments don't usually come with laundry in the suite when renting.

A lot of landlords are realising they need in suite laundries. Never had a problem renting with a laundry but there are still plenty that don't have one. I rented the upstairs of a bungalow ( basement was a separate unit) three good size bedrooms for $1200 peer month. That included all utilities and heat, laundry was brand new to and not shared, basement had its own. Even had basic cable too.
That was in Edmonton and I found it on Kijiji.
I've bought my own condo now.

I haven't even lived in an apartment that was equipped with ensuite laundry, only option was the public wash room at 2-3 dollars a load.

Granted if its in a private house, landlords have more options.

But if the apartment wasn't built with laundry in mind and its in a building not owned by the landlord, they can't really offer it.

I wash by hand, I refuse to pay 5 per load for laundry (3 wash 2 to dry)

My condo wasnt meant to have it but a large closet is next to the bathroom so was easy to install. I found a good choice of rentals in Edmonton in apartment buildings who obviously had installed laundries. Most where closets pressed into use as a laundry which seems to be the popular way to go and buy a purpose built stacking washer dryer. What put me off most of them was no utilities included which is why I went for the bungalow. Got a friend to share it with me so $600 per month each for everything. And someone to help cut the grass etc lol
