Default Seeking advice from academics (Toronto)

Hi all

We're currently negotiating a (fairly) senior position in a Toronto university.

I know there are a decent amount of academics on the forum so I hoped to get some insight.

I know every uni has its own culture (even every department/institute) and experiences are very personal but I'd love to hear opinions.

Some of this may not be for a public forum so if anyone interested could PM me that would be fantastic.

1. Do you think there's a big cultural difference in an academic sense to equivalent universities in the U.K.? (Our experience is of a very high pressure research environment in London which is focussed on income generation)
2. I understand you get a lot less holidays working in Canada - does this also happen in academia (tenure positions) or do you still tend to get good holidays and benefits like you do in the UK?
3. Did you move from a UK university to Toronto one and how do you feel about it - was it a good move for you?
4. The other thing on my mind is salary negotiation but I don't think I can ask for help there - we have to research and put a value in that ourselves.

I would just love to hear your stories 😁

It all depend on if you're any good.

Universities are like funding black holes, they gobble up everything.
