Saskatoon v Calgary ???
Hi all, we currently live in Saskatoon and have an opportunity to move to Calgary, and we're worried to make another move and it be the wrong decision. There are several things we like about Saskatoon but also some things we really don't like ie. Weather, scenery/walks and variety of things to do. However Calgary seems so hustle and bustle and we kind of like the small town feel?? We have researched Mckenzie towne which seems ideal but have also seen a few crime stories from around that area..???? I'm new to this site and was just hoping for some feedback from anyone that may live or know about life in Calgary to help us make an informed decision? We have a young family so things that are important to us are: safety/low crime, places to go with the children, walks with the dog and a good community feel. Thanks all

As you're deduced already, they're very different cities, although arguably half the population of Calgary are from Saskatchewan. At least, at any Stamps Riders game here it feels like that.
There's going to be more crime in a city of 1.1m than a city of 220k, so if it seems like you're seeing more crime reported - that's why.
However, the deep south (MacKenzie etc), and far NW (Tuscany etc) are generally lower crime areas.
<dons flame retardant suit>
The general rule of thumb is NW, SW, deep south - lower crime.
NE, E, near SE - higher crime.

Well the extent of our concern about crime, living in McKenzie Towne, is that last night my husband told me he was going to close and lock the backyard gate (gate was unlocked and shed was unlocked also) as there have been some reports of opportunistic crimes lately. Other than that, we've never had a concern. Between us and our neighbours, there is a collection of sports stuff outside (bikes, scooters, hockey net, sticks) which is out all the time untouched. Mind you we do live in a quiet cul-de-sac which probably helps.

If you like the small town feel, the check out Cochrane, Aidrie, Okotoks, Chestermere, etc. All satellite towns within commute distance (some longer than others) from Calgary.
Here in the 'mid' NW, the worst we see is a little bit of teen graffiti at the bus stop now and again, and a lot of people don't seem to lock their cars overnight which leads to petty pilfering. (Other half left his truck open by accident outside the house once and they took a couple of ipod cables and stuff).

You might want to check out the school situation in the neighbourhood. The schools might be full and your kids might not be able to attend your closest school. Someone who lives in the area would know for sure.
Check out cbe.ab.ca and cssd.ab.ca whichever applies.
