Re: Rooms in Vancouver area
But that is still 500 more per month then 800 is, so for someone looking for 800 and lower, most of the time you gotta live with others and rent a room. Obviously depends on profession but from my perspective 1,300 is too much for rent, but we only make 1,500 a month total after taxes so our top end market for rent is 700 which is basically impossible to do in Vancouver without roommates.

Update for you - gotta a room down Nanaimo drive not far from the sky train station - lovely house and quiet. Which is what I want $700 a month.
Got an interview next week for a part time youth worker role and was informed by a voluntary coordinator for a mental health charity to apply for their youth work roles as I had more than enough experience for it so fingers crossed (sorry can't find the emote for it)

That's way out of my price range as I'm single and currently on a minimum wage job - when I meet mr millionaire then I'm sure things will change lol

I almost rented in that area, its a good location since you have easy access to sky train. (only reason I didn't was the rent was 575 there and I found my old place for 450, so I took the 450 since less rent is the better.)
Even if not single 1,300 a month is pricey, need a decent income to pay that kind of rent every month for sure. We have 1 1/2 incomes and could not afford it.

Re: Rooms in Vancouver area
I just moved into Burnaby around the Boundary Road area... There are plenty of nice basement suites here with 1 bedroom for $800 or if you share with others that'll knock it down to $500ea. ~15 minutes to Waterfront and if you're catching the #28 to get to the station, you'll still be in Zone 1.
I actually work in Burnaby, so it's really convenient to me, but even if I did work downtown, I think I would still live here. It's nice to be out of the city, but not in the middle of nowhere!

Hi Beckiwoo,
That's been my experience with asking if friends can stay. Every place I've considered, they've all stated that they want a contribution. That said, it would be cheaper I'm sure, than your friend hostelling it or airbnbing.
In terms of deposit, again, I've always been asked for first and last month. Apart from the guys I'm staying with now, as I had a good long chat with them and they got the feeling I'm a reliable guy so didn't ask for it.
Good luck in Vancouver.

Yeah I don't get the whole skiing for a contribution for someone that is staying over for a few days. But I went out with a Canadian friend yesterday and he said it was the norm out here.

So if rent is 400 a month, you would need 600 to move in, 400 rent, and 200 for deposit. The deposit is returned on move out provided you follow the rules on ending tenancy and leave the place clean with no damage.

Re: Rooms in Vancouver area
I've never had a landlord ask for that, not sure its the norm, but a shady way to get more money from tenants, may not be legal either, but with everything when renting a room, things get into a grey area sometimes.
