Nexus 5 or OnePlus One

Re: Nexus 5 or OnePlus One
Android vs. iPhone is a personal preference IMO. They are both equal in what they can do etc, with time effort and $$ you can make anything happen on either. Its just what you prefer. Your kids made great, informed choices
If looking for a new carrier i'd recommend Koodo monthly or if you like Rogers' coverage better Fido has the same plans usually.

Yes. Buy it directly from Apple so it's unlocked. You may have to get a new SIM from your carrier (depends on s the size you currently have and what goes on the new phone), but yes, just pop in the new SIM and all good to go.

And yes, if their current phone does not have a nano sim then you will need to either get a new SIM from Rogers ($11.30 with tax) or cut down the current SIM card (free with an x-acto knife, but if you botch it you'll have to get a new card anyway)

This. Do not buy it from Rogers. No sense in buying it outright from them as it will be locked to their network. Buy it for the same outright price from the apple store or Official Apple Store Canada — iPhone, iPad and more

Yes, shouldn't be a problem. It's basically the same process as when you lose your phone. They issue you a new SIM and then tie your account to the new SIM number. Pretty straight forward. Any Rogers store should be able to do it. You'll be charged for the new SIM card, but as Gozit said, it's not a huge amount. (He said $11, I can't confirm that, but it shouldn't be anything notable.)

On a completely unrelated note, the Bell thunder bay plans compared to the normal Ontario in market plans give me a sad
$60 for unlimited nationwide minutes, unlimited intl text, 100 US roaming txts, 6gb data and all the fixings ($70 w/ new plus smartphone)
$75 for the same thing and 12gb data ($85 w/ new plus smartphone)
In the rest of Ontario $70 gets you 500MB. Ffs.
