Default My scenario,honest opinion please.

Hello all,we are moving to stoneycreek Ontario in spring,if we sell our London flat we will have enough money to be mortgage free in Canada and a decent savings pot for retirement, for us the move is a semi retirement plan, work part time just to pay for everyday expenses as we will have no debts to speak of and try to get the kids a good start in life.My question is to do with the health system,I depend on hypertension pills and cholesterol tablets,in the UK I pay for my prescription, how would I fair in Canada?looking online if we earn less than $20000 a year I would be able to get them subsidised ,but would our savings be considered as income?if yes would we have to get health insurance to cover the costs?
Thanks to all

I believe the scheme in Ontario limits your cost for prescriptions to something like 5% of income. The interest on 'savings' would count as part of the income rather than the savings themselves counting.

Are you planning on just getting by on those numbers or living comfortably? Even deducting our debts from our salary, we still require quite a lot more than you're suggesting to live a nice lifestyle.. And I was kind of assuming that you intend to earn $20000 and your partner would be earning a smiler amount if not more..

So 20,000 a year assuming no deductions works out at $1666 a month..

My son's first quarter swim fees would take half of that immediately admittedly it's a swim club but..

Are you planning on living off the grid- grow your own veg/cut your own trees for fuel/no clubs or activities for the kids? Genuinely interested!

Lesson 1. When you have nothing useful to say, say nothing! When all one can come up with is nonsense, does nothing for the credibility of their argument.

Lesson 2. American English. Bigotry in American English is 'intolerance towards a group of people in general, based on their group characteristics'. In my view, such as spongers as an example. So maybe you are correct.

Lesson 3. Sentences begin with capital letters. Periods are useful in sentences and for paragraph structure. This helps avoid rambling nonsense and enhances readability.

Lesson 4. If you don't want an 'honest opinion', don't ask for it!

Harsh words. I think calling the OP a sponger is unfair and presumptious. They could well be planning on contributing to Canadian society in other ways, volunteering, charity work etc. we don't know.

There's really no need to launch an attack. I can't say I blame them for responding vociferously, but it was a touch rabid.

OP, when you get to Canada is your intention on renting or buying? For rent I would budget not less than $1000/mth + utilities, phone, cable TV, internet.

If buying a mortgage free modest single family property (exclude condo), besides closing costs & furnishing the place, you will have the ongoing added costs of property tax, utilities, cable TV, phones, internet, insurance & maintenence, that could run you (not less than) ~$1000/mth.

Since you mentioned $20,000/yr income, would that be combined for the two of you & would that income be from savings interest/investments or in combination with working?

Have you given any thought about transportation as to whether you will buy a vehicle (together with all the associated costs) or be using public transit?

For the part of your question with respect to the 'Trillium drug plan' - for a couple with $20,000 income your yearly deductable will be approx $400 [my link in post#3] on the basis the drugs that you take are covered, some which won't be & you'll have to pay the full cost, that could be a few hundred dollars or just a few dollars for each prescription.

My observation is that the 'subsidized drugs' you asked about may be a small part of the overall cost of living in Ontario, although a penny saved here & there may help.... just saying
