That's an option . Last time one of my family members tried that, dad (call recipient) refused to accept the call saying "I don't know anyone abroad".

At the time, 3/4 of his offspring were "abroad"...

Did you sign up with a contract on Virgin?
If not, cancel and move to Koodo, they have the same plans as Virgin, same network, less shoddy of a company and unlimited UK calling for $20/month extra if your chosen plan has unlimited Canada-wide minutes.

The 1000 free minutes is limited to a select number of countries and does not include the UK.

Not directly related to the original question, but from experience: Koodo coverage (compared to Virgin & maybe other providers) is not as good as it is claimed to be, outside the cities in this part of Canada.

Interesting, in these parts koodo blows the likes of wind and public mobile clear out of the water!

I had exactly the same problem with virgin, no one said we couldn't make international calls when we signed up. I urgently needed to call my UK bank & asked if they would lift it & they refused stating some rubbish about not being able to whilst they still have a deposit from us (zero sense I know).

I bought credit on Skype in the end.

I was going to switch to koodo who don't discriminate against immigrants but couldn't be bothered with the hassle of it.

Thats weird.

Koodo uses the Telus network (they are owned by them) , Virgin uses the Bell network. (Owned by them)

Telus and Bell share towers with each other. From Ontario east its Bell towers Manitoba West Telus towers. When they built the new 3G and 4G networks they had this agreement that one of them would build the network on the west coast the other on the east and they'd share it. So Virgin/Koodo should have the exact same coverage.

How long ago was it that you had these observations, or do you have Koodo atm?

My wife has a Bell provided iphone. I have a Virgin iphone. We frequently get very different amounts of cell coverage. Signal strength is definitely not consistent between them, for whatever reason I don't know.
