Re: Lots of questions about Edmonton
£160! thats amazing we have been expecting around £2k for the pair will definitely have a look into them.
I think we'll be looking into small 4x4s with some good tyres as it makes more sense with the dogs something like a freelander (I am also a big fan of landrovers, plan to get a disco 3 or something when we start a family) may invest in a set of bullbars and tree sliders aswell to protect against impact then haha
Could someone also explain house terminology to me please, I'm not familiar with duplex, half duplex, basement suite etc
Thanks
Shane

Re: Lots of questions about Edmonton
Hi, we haven't long arrived from the uk, currently living approx an hour away from edmonton, we love it.
Firstly we also brought our jack Russell with us. We flew with Air Transat, cost around 150, I did everything, pet passport, rabies, vets letter, the only thing they were concerned with was the rabies vaccination, which cost around 35. I was amazed at how easy and cheap it was, I was expecting to pay around 1000.
Half Duplex is semi detached, basement suite is simply just renting the basement of the house, they split them up, duplex I guess is a detached.
We haven't bought a car yet as hubby had a truck through his employer, but I will need one soon, I do feel I would need some sort of truck just to feel safe, especially in the winter.
It's been a lot easier than we anticipated, everybody's experience is different, so far so good for us, best of luck!

Oh yeah, you also have to buy the correct size dog crate for the flight which I purchased off amazon, cost around £80.

A detached house is just, that a stand alone single family dwelling.

I don't think in the UK we call a pair of semi's anything - we only refer to one side as a semi

Re: Lots of questions about Edmonton
In the UK a semi is a semi afaik.
it is confusing figuring out whats what when you 1st arrive. This is my understanding.
Bungalow = bungalow but more often that not with a basement
Semi detatched = duplex
a fourplex is two at the front and two at the back
Terraced = townhome
flat = condo

A fourplex can also be two up and two down
A flat is an apartment it can be a condo apartment or a rental apartment.
A townhome can also be a condo.

A bungalow is a sigle story home built primarily at grade, more often than not it "will" have a basement. If there is no basement it would likely be listed as "built on slab" or it could be called a rancher.

Re: Lots of questions about Edmonton
I've seen a few bungalows without basements built on "slabs" of concrete, not very common but they are there. i was looking in Winnipeg for one because of the higher risk of floods and being single i didn't NEED a basement space.

We're talking about Edmonton which is in Alberta. I'm sure you can get bungalows without basements but generally they come with a basement or are otherwise called cottages or mobiles IN ALBERTA in our experience.

You may not have come across any in your limited experience but they do exist.
