Re: Indian restaurants in Vernon, BC
I'm unfamiliar with Vernon, but a quick search online shows that there are more options for Indian cuisine in nearby Kelowna. The Vernon results don't look promising:

For food inquiries, I've found success asking on the BC Chowhound forum, especially if there's an ingredient or a particular style of dish you're hoping to find:
B.C. (inc. Vancouver) - Chowhound
Good luck! (I am now craving curry, thank you very much!)

Ahh yes. Indian food in Canada isn't the same as in the UK. Set your expectations accordingly. You'll be lucky to find dhansak at all, let alone a decent one!
In BC at least, the Indian population is primarily Sikh/Punjabi, and these communities have been in BC for over a century. In BC, the Indian food you get served will be Punjabi-inspired to suit Canadian palates, and typically will not be inspired by Bangladeshi or Gujurati influences, or English palates.
There is no curry culture in Canada like there is in the UK, especially outside of the large cities.
Edit: This is an insightful read at the curry culture in Vancouver compared to the UK. You can extrapolate Vancouver for BC if you'd like:

Re: Indian restaurants in Vernon, BC
Food that is supposed to be spicy seems to be bland and tasteless over here.
Presumably so as not to offend anyone or (perish the thought) give them the trots.
Any type of cook-in sauce jar (if you can find one) seems to taste of nothing. The same goes not only for Indian (even Pataks limited Canadian selection) but also for Italian and Chinese.
Whilst I'm on my soap-box, why does every supermarket (sorry, grocery store) seem to have a whole aisle of salsa? All the same brand and all the same flavour usually...

Re: Indian restaurants in Vernon, BC
Because Mexican food has been a staple "ethnic cuisine" in Canada much longer than Indian curries?

I have started to make my own curries and I have found I really enjoy cooking them, no more complicated than a lasagne really, just different ingredients and complete yumminess. I'm hoping for a curry cookbook for crimble so I can expand my repertoire at the moment I have a tiny Madhur Jaffrey book 100 Weeknight curries, all that have been tried have been on the very tasty side

I also cook my own, I was taught whilst working with some Pakistanis and Indians in Kuwait! Occasionally it would be nice to find a restaurant that could do it for me

Re. Pataks, I like their Spicy Butter Chicken sauce, but only after I've modified it with a pinch of fenugreek leaves, a rounded tsp. of turmeric, a flat tsp. of cumin, four whole cloves, and added chili powder to taste (use the proper red chili powder from Indian stores, not that brown junk in little jars from supermarkets).
It's all in the experimentation. You never know, you might just turn up yer own classic.

I started to cook my own curries, I found some of the curries too bland.
You can buy the pre-made stuff in Superstore, make your own 'thorkar' (in my parents mother tongue) which is adding the spices again in a premix and it tastes pretty awesome.
If you have any bland tasting curries or leftovers.. try this.
Chop some garlic, ginger and onions and fry. Throw in three green chillies. Once they are done add some 1. Garam Masala powder, 2. Tumeric, 3. Fine black pepper and anything other spice you like. Add a chopped tomato and let it melt in.
Then add any bland tasting curry, stir in till fully hot. Add fresh coriander/Cilantro and serve. Vollia, your bland tasting curry has become pretty tasty!
