Yeah I definitely will be trying now, do you know how difficult it is to get a credit card in Canada with absolutely no credit history there though?

I didn`t find it very hard at all. We weren`t given one of those secured cards either. Walked into a bank one day, came out with a credit card with a limit of $1,000 which was increased regularly until it reached the dizzy height it is now!

Go into a bank, ask, and if they don`t give you one, go into the one next door and repeat

When we first arrived, RBC wouldn't give us unsecured credit, so we did have to deposit $1000 into a GIC. However, using it and paying it off monthly builds a credit history, even on TWP. I recently bought a new car and got approved for the regular finance deal through Scotiabank based upon my credit history, the finance manager left the SIN numbers off the application so it wasn't an issue.

But I agree with others, I find Canada is much more credit card orientated than the UK. Travel bookings, websites, rental deposits, even car park ticket machines are often credit-card only.

Canada is just coming around to the fact you can get a Visa Debit card. At the moment most debit cards are only Interac enabled - not Visa meaning you can only use it on websites approved and in agreement with interac.
