Default Health Insurance for Travel to Canada

Good Morning,

My Wifes parents are travelling from the U.K to visit us in Ontario. They are quite elderly and my Father in Law would have had a few health issues over the years from a coronary aspect. They have been getting crazy quotes for travel insurance as much as 1200 GBP!!!
Has anyone on the forum got experience of getting cover without getting ripped off!!

Many Thanks

Farmboy

Not directly, but the cost of travel insurance is one reason that my folks (84 & 77) cite for not coming to visit us again. I did look into staysure.co.uk when doing a bit of investigation on their behalf.

Sounds about right - my elderly MIL was paying roughly that to visit for several months at a time. The trip got too much for her in the end, so we've returned to England to take care of her.

Emergency treatment costs in Ontario are roughly the same as those in the US. We paid a similar amount 9 years for my elderly MIL to visit the US for 2 weeks...so yes that price sounds about right.

Oh Dear!!!

This is bad news. As Pensioners even though they got a great deal on flights this health care cost will really stretch their budget!!
However on the other hand they wont be paying anything for accommodation or food!!

Thanks Guys!!

Be warned that as they get older (80+) with existing conditions, health insurance cover may not be made available to them.

Yup. I spent 5 days in hospital...no surgery or ICU...$30K+. We had to settle the bill before leaving the hospital and yes we had health insurance.

If I recall correctly, a couple, I believe from Wales were visiting Vancouver a few years back, she had a stroke while here. Insurance would not pay up, cost $250k+. Husband says he phoned the insurer before they left, she had a TIA prior to leaving the UK. Insurer says no record of call and no written notification. Vancouver resident had a whip round to help and I think their MP got involved and it ended OK, but a close call. Many horror stories of people visiting NA without medical insurance and losing everything.

That quote does sound about right ............. but we were also informed that it was OUR responsibility if an elderly parent had an "event" while over here and their insurance would not cover it.

In other words, WE would have had to find that $250K that Aviator mentioned above.

Pain in the backside getting insurance when you get older! I was 70 on our last trip to the USA and my insurance was £280 , with no pre-conditions, good health etc. My wife, who was 62, has diabetes, had a heart attack 10 years ago, arthritis etc and after a medical evaluation the best deal I could get, to cover these conditions, was £700. Messed up the budget but had no choice. I believe we used Allsure in the end. Now i'm older still and it's difficult to get insurance for me, let alone my wife!

DId you know you should get insurance when travelling out of province too as ambulances, repatriation/reprovincation?, and some other costs might not be covered by your province?

They should carefully examine any policy they take out to make sure that it covers their pre-conditions. Most travel insurance won't unless taken out within certain timescales (usually 10 to 14 days) of the first payment for flights, hotel booking etc.
