Gran bringing (used) baby clothes - need to declare?
Hi all,
Just a quick question. My mother-in-law is coming out to visit for the birth of our second child. She is bringing a bunch of used baby / toddler clothes from her son, who lives in the UK.
Just wanting to confirm understanding of the $60 gift limit.
- Is it $60 total in gifts?
- Or is it $60 per each gift?
I'm fairly confident the limit is per gift, but just wanting to check.
In other words, she could bring in $2000 worth of used clothes and any other items (it won't be that amount, lol), but as long as each item is $60 or less, then there is no duty, etc. to be paid?
On the form (I forget exactly what it looks like!), does she need to list items or is it a simple yes/no as to whether any individual gift exceeds the $60 limit?
Thanks!
Graham.

If she is bringing used kids clothes, these are of little resale value. Figure out a value ahead of time. My guess would be 10-15% of original cost. Here one can hardly give away used kids clothes.

Its $60 Cad per gift. If filling out the declaration card you would not be exceeding the gift exemption even if the amount is over $60. Just declare the gifts.
Part B Visitors to Canada question answer would be No.

Just to clarify - when you say declare them, do you just mean mention it to the border guard if/when asked? As you pointed out, the form is a simple yes/no in terms of exceeding the limits, but doesn't ask for any list or even dollar amount (in the way that returning residents are asked for a dollar value). So there isn't a way to declare them on the form.
So do you mean volunteer that you have gifts and a brief summary of what they are? Or only if asked if you have any?
Thanks!

Thanks - that explains things perfectly.
