Default Extended vehicle warranty; is it worth it?

So, we've just been over to visit the big-time car dealer up here, and got ourselves a Ford Ranger (2011, low mileage) for a decent price, but now we are being sold an extended warranty.
We've never owned a vehicle this big before, and quite concerned about the pot holes and other weather issues, does anyone have a view on whether these car warranties are really worth the money?
The dealer is offering his all-in package (4 years, 80k kms) for just under £3k with a $250 deductible each claim.
A quick look online and I found another one for $2k - no deductible.

Any views?

Often extended warranties for used vehicles have a host of exclusions. I believe the dealers make good coin on it.

For a used vehicle, I would not purchase one.

IMO, no.

If you have to take the car to the dealer for repairs, be aware that they will probably charge you more than a good, local mechanic. You might find this interesting:

Find a good local mechanic, and you'll have no need to pay the high prices at the dealership UNLESS there happens to be a recall of your model and only the dealership can handle it.

Recall work is the only work we have ever had done on any of our vehicles .......... we've been with our current mechanic (or his father ) for at least 20 years. In that time we've had 2 Hyundais and 1 Subaru Forester, all bought new and kept for at least 6 years.

It's a Ranger. There's a Ranger in our garage. It's not a great vehicle for the winter but way better than the rental Kia we had to push everywhere.

It's well worth getting some sort of breakdown/towing cover too - a bit like the AA - for when you skid off the road in winter, the battery conks out etc. Canadian Tire do it, though CAA seems more popular. And expect Black Friday deals on it...

Yes, I think having one of those plans makes sense. We have the CAA one.

This.

My son met a good local mechanic through a Subaru rally club. They guy knows what he is doing and doesn't rip people off. His mates, that is.

He is currently working on my wife's birthday present, to get it completely pukka. We may yet go with the (rather expensive) idea of getting it repainted by him.

A 1980s Corvette was a daft idea in the first place. Having it painted bright pink is even more daft, which is why the idea appeals.

We have two Fords, a Fusion and an F150. When we bought the Fusion they went into a really hard sale pitch to sell the extended warranty. We said no (repeatedly) then eventually agreed and called the next day to cancel it. When we bought the F150 (different dealership in a very different type of town) they didn't even ask if we wanted it. The money you save over time in never buying extended warranties more than pays for the occasional item you buy that needs it. CAA (or similar) is definitely worth it. Having found myself stranded in the middle of nowhere in the dark a few weeks back I have no idea what I would have done without them.

Any particular year / model of Kia? GID engine issues?

Curious as I've a 2014 Forte5 SX, which has the 1.6T GDI in it.

As others have said, on the whole, no, not worth getting an extended warranty, and a local trusted mechanic is the way to go. When it comes to recalls, and I might be wrong here, but I thought they'd be covered by the manufacturer? As you'd have to take it to the dealer, I can see them finding "additional" things that need fixing, which you'll have to pay for - what a shocker!

Yes, a local mechanic can do recall repairs and bill the manufacturer. However, often the dealer is the best place to go as they will likely have been trained on and dealt with the recall repair, will be more likely to have any required parts in stock and there should be no charge for recall repair parts/labour. If the dealer finds any "additional" things, I always decline and take it to my local mechanic to have him double check.
