Evaluation of UK HND Marine Engineering in Canada
Dear All,
I have done my 2 year HND Marine Engineering from City Of Glasgow College,Scotland UK. My first priority is to get a BEng Mechanical Engineering degree and then settlement or work permit. But i don't know how Canada accept my UK HND Qualification. Plz help me friends and guide me asap, how can i get top up year in Mechanical Engineering in Canada.
First thing is save time and money.
1- I want to complete my BEng Mechanical Engineering within 1 to 2 years. I am not interested to take admission in 1st year in UNI because in this case i have no benefit of my HND.
2- I think Canada is the best option if they give me credit transfer in any year because there is mostly UNI fees are $10K to $13K as compare to UK and AUS. And also there is benefit to get work permit or settlement.
Why i don't to want go back UK again because there is no benefit of settlement or work permit.
Thanks
Kind Regards
Rana Khan

the HND doesn't equate to much...i have an HND in Manufacturing Engineering and its worthless here...do your degree in Scotland and it will be a lot cheaper

Well me old luver, no Canadian Uni will give you any recognition for your HND so you'll have to do your full 4 year degree. It will be in Canada though. If you don't want to start again with a degree but want advanced standing then your best of in the UK.

There are no short cuts ever.....
Since you already know the fee structure of an undergrad program (have you a particular university in mind), my suggestion is look at a Canadian university(s) of your choice (straight from the horses mouth) that have the discipline you're after & apply on the basis you have an HND & see what they come back with. Its the only way to do it, because you wont IMO get the answer on this forum.

OP, how did your UK HND course measure up to the following program?

OP, may I suggest that you contact the following university - one that has been equipped to deal with taking Engineering Technology Diploma Grads through to Degree,
http://engineering.lakeheadu.ca/inquiry-form/
as well as they have a familiarity with foreign student credentials

Re: Evaluation of UK HND Marine Engineering
Every engineer I work with in Atlantic Canada seams to of done only a 3 years degree.
3 years is a lot quicker than 4 so yes come to Canada.
But be aware that Canada is so expensive, especially if you’re a student. Alcohol is 4 pound a pint plus tip, rent is over 500 pound a month. Chicken breasts 15 pound a pack, milk 2 pints is 3 pound and bread is 2 pound a loaf.
It gets extremely cold in Canada and to heat an apartment is expensive, Oil is $1.15 a liter I spend around $3500 a year to heat my 3 bedroom house.

An HND may (how good are your marks) get you into 3rd year of a 4 year Marine Engineering program at a Canadian university. Of course depends on other factors + you have to pay big fees, accommodation & living costs etc, then you need to apply for a student visa.
There are no short cuts ever.....

See i am a International student and i am from Asia and in UK i payed all of things like, accommodation, bills or etc. As a international student UK or AUS are costly for International students. In UK minimum international student fees is starting from 11000 pounds to 15000 pounds, in AUS minimum i starting from 20000 dollars to 28000 dollars.
So why i am choosing Canada because in Canada mostly university fees are starting from 10000 dollars to 15000 dollars. So this is cheaper for me, as i international student. In Canada after study i will get a work permit but in UK i can't get that.
My point is very clear, why i did post here because i just want to know on this forum any UK HND holder person did a bachelor engineering in any topup year in Canada. Maybe with the help of WES (World Education Service).
Here is the link of my HND to entry in University. On this website they had given some information but for Canada they just say (WES)

At least then you'd have a definitive answer.

One year of engineering at University of Toronto for an international student is approx. $40,000
Applied Science and Engineering (International Fees)
ETA: A quick check of UBC, McGill and Waterloo have tuition in the $30,000 - $40,000 range

If I may suggest - all you need to do is apply to the university of your choice to see if you will be accepted into 3rd year of an Engineering program
On the University of Manitoba 'International student fees'
University of Manitoba - Student Affairs - International Undergraduate Student Costs
Your direct question with regard to the holder of a UK HND in engineering being accepted into the 3rd of an engineering program .... simple answer is yes, but depends on case by case of your course curriculum & the results of the marks (GPA) achieved.
I also know that someone with the older OND was allowed entry into first year of a 4-year engineering degree program at an Ontario university

Maybe the OP could get into the B.Tech degree in Marine something or other?
Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland - Tuition and Finances
OP, move onto start applying to the university
