Apologies for shameless self-promotion, but....any Brits out there who are interested in/are already planning to go to Canada/have already made it, you'd be very welcome to join this club:

it would be more interesting if it was a mailing list, rather than a chat thing.

Not entirely sure what you are referring to. It isn't a 'chat thing' any more than you could call this forum; it is a yahoo message board with the option of receiving posts by email.

it didn't offer that option to me, and it had all the trappings -- namely "User ABCD
is online", etc -- that made me think it was realtime.
Is it available on groups.yahoo.com?

OK: It is a Yahoo Club, not Group, although there is little difference, save for the history of how these two entities ended up being part of Yahoo.
It *is* a message board.
It is *not* real-time.
When you go to the url, what you see is what you get (and what you see is a page with member IDs and topics on it, much like this one)
It has a chat function, but I have never used it; and to my knowledge neither have any of the members. You have to have a Yahoo ID to post, but other than that, the messages posted by members are in the public domain. If you (heaven forbid) decide to commit to joining, you can decide to be 'invisible' so that people will not see that you are online and relentlessly stalk you and quiz you on the minutae of What Canadian Thanksgiving Really Means...
Oh and you can leave at any time.
Do hope this fulfils your criteria of it being 'more interesting'...
Cheers,
