NS has a major shortage of doctors and nurses especially in rural areas or areas that are over 1 hour from Halifax. There is no choice but have the local hospitals covered by GP’s and NP’s/paramedics. GP’s tend to run days and NP/paramedics are generally nights. We see many times if the local rural hospital has a small outpatient or Emergency department closed during the day because there is no GP coverage. Anything major gets transferred to the nearest county hospital or Halifax but is quickly transferred back as soon as stable where GP retakes over care.
