Daughter just finished her masters degree and looking for work.
Hi All,
hoping someone can help give my daughter some pointers in securing work in Canada and what Province .Just now we are living in Ottawa but will be moving next year to Calgary and then possibly BC.
My daughter has a BSc (Hons) Chemistry/ Pharmaceutical Chemistry/ MSc Biotechnology and has so far been unable to secure employment in her field. If any of you good folk have some pointers or even better contacts ,it would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Arty & Family

Re: Daughter just finished her masters degree and looking for work.
It might help if your daughter could give a hint as to what kind of job in her field she's looking for?

Is she also looking FROM the UK, or will she be looking once she's in Canada?

Re: Daughter just finished her masters degree and looking for work.
Has she tapped into her university's career service resources (assuming she's studied in Canada)? ETA: just saw an old post, seems she studied overseas? Doesn't change the rest of my post.
McGill, for example (amongst others, just the first place I thought of to check), seems to have a decent listing of resources:
https://www.mcgill.ca/caps/students/.../life-sciences
How has she been structuring her job search so far? Applying to job ads on employment sites? Or/and looking at specific companies/research institutes?

Re: Daughter just finished her masters degree and looking for work.
Any job involving research in these fields will require a PhD. Even then, it is likely to be competitive.
As a general comment, most master's degrees in the sciences have limited value in themselves, unless they have a niche focus. Employers are more likely to be interested in the content of the BSc.

Yeah she has used job search services here but they're not too familiar with her field but helped with her resume, interview techniques etc. She has also been doing both job sites and looking at specific companies websites and looking at current opportunities or just submitting a resume in case something comes up in the future. So far one interview in Ottawa which went to someone with more work experience which is the catch 22 situation .

Cheers bra_boy.
The annoying thing is she was offered a PhD this year at Heriot- Watt University, but she did not want her PR to run out ,plus wanted a break from schooling

Many of my former students with similar backgrounds got their first jobs here https://careersen-apotex.icims.com/jobs/search?ss=1 . Perhaps she needs to be more flexible on location?
