Which country is tax owed?
Apologies if this is posted in the wrong section - I'm not entirely sure where it belongs.
I'm posting a question on behalf of a friend. He is British, about to start work for a Canadian company in France. He was working for the Canadian company in Canada but is soon to be out of status so is relocating.
Where are taxes owed? Canada, since the employer is Canadian (if so, is this any kind of issue as he isn't legal to work in Canada?) or France?
I should also point out in his new position he will be working remotely so may be in various other countries in Europe at some point but primarily France.

If it's the same company it's probably considered to be an intracompany transfer, so the answer is France, but if there's a totalization agreement he may be paying payroll taxes to Canada still, i.e. CPP. But you can usually choose and as he has no status in Canada the answer is France.
