Car oil change intervals

Re: Car oil change intervals
Been changing my own oil every year (usually spring ) Jeep tells me every 3000 miles , Been doing this for 8 years , Car still runs like new , I do use a good synthetic and a good oil filter , Cost is under $50 .
Its a NA thing that needs debunking . Although I see most new cars are now recommending every year or 10,000 miles now . But the Dealer will still try and get you in every 3000 miles , Its a cash cow for them .

Re: Car oil change intervals
I have no doubt the oil in my car can go further, but too risky while it's under warranty.

As I said most new cars can now go 10,000 miles some a bit less , It's the Dealers that want to change your oil every 3000 , And just follow the warranty requirements.

Re: Car oil change intervals
Its probably because a lot of people here still use mineral oil rather than synthetic.
I change my oil (always fully synthetic) and filter when I change my tyres from summer to winter regardless of miles.

We do synthetic since that is was Mazda recommends. Mazda uses Castrol Edge and no clue which filter they use, probably their own or whatever company they use in their cars.

Re: Car oil change intervals
I buy premium brand synthetic when it's on sale...about $30 for 4.4 or 5L. With the extra kms I believe it affords me over mineral oil, there's not too much cost difference. And then there's the added advantage of saved time under the hood by extending oil change intervals.
A Canadian Tire employee once told me that synthetic should be good for 16,000kms. DON'T TAKE THAT AS GOSPEL (because I didn't), but I'm comfortable with 8-10k.

The cost of synthetic can turn people off it. Its close to double at most places who do oil changes.

Yeah that's roughly it. The difference between asking a dealership and a less biased source perhaps.

Re: Car oil change intervals
But how many manufacturers allow intervals that long and not risk voiding the warranty for not performing scheduled maintenance?
I am not going to risk voiding the warranty, and many others won't either, so synthetic costs more as the intervals are still fairly short overall.
Mazda has our car's intervals at 4 months or 8,000km's so nowhere near 15,000km's.
We use synthetic, but not sure I'd trust it to go 15,000km with almost nothing but short, quick stop and go driving.
Once out of warranty, I would push it back to probably every 6 months though.

It was the US handbook miles re-written in Km

Re: Car oil change intervals
So 16,000kms is about right
the reco from our fleet dept is one a year or every 10,000miles for std engines, --turbos can be lower and change at 5,000miles (8000km)
and I'm assured that if you bite the bullet and go for the extend performance oils and don't drive like a maniac their claims of 15,000 between changes is very real

Re: Car oil change intervals
It's totally down to your driving habits and the weather conditions you drive in.
Short drives and extreme weather conditions will shorten the life span of the oil.
Synthetic will last longer than mineral.
If you live in BC on the lower mainland the recommended intervals intervals are stupidly short, if you live in the colder/hotter parts, not so much. The intervals will be based on worst possible case scenarios, however as others have said, if you don't follow them and your engine goes bang, you won't have warranty cover.
Personally, on my Suburban, under warranty, I use fully synthetic and follow the intervals. I am very sure the oil would last well past 12000km as it's like new when changed.
On my wifes Infiniti, out of warranty, not so high mileage, I use mineral oils and extend the intervals out a little (from 6000km to 8000km). The oil is in good condition when its changed and I am confident her oil would last to well over 10000km.
Reasons for changing oil on the intervals,
1. Maintaining the warranty.
2. Residual value of the vehicle (although this doesn't seem to make as much difference here as it does in the UK)
3. Better starting performance - particularly in cold climates and particularly with synthetic.
4. Better fuel economy (particularly with synthetic over mineral)
Just my tuppence worth

Re: Car oil change intervals
Just done an Oil change myself on my Jeep Cherokee , Bought some Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic from Walmart $28 for 5L ,(on sale ) $10 for an OEM oil filter , Tools needed : 13mm spanner (wrench ) 24 mm socket for Oil filter , drain pan. Total cost was less than $50 and I will be good for a year unless I rack up a load of miles .
Keep receipt in case you have a highly unlikely lubrication problem with engine under warranty. Lots of people out there wasting money on paying for oil changes , Especially at the main dealers .
