I'm in AB and paying easy double what I would have paid in the UK.

Insurance, like cell phone contracts and cable TV are ridiculously expensive here!!

My auto insurance for a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan with Aviva is now $1096. We've been here since emigrating from the UK since April 2014 and I just feel I'm being ripped off. I've shopped around and have found a slightly cheaper company, Economical, but still expensive. In the UK my Citroen Picasso was about 250GBP. I'm 72 and retired, no commuting and do about 20k kilometers a year. Is this because we live in AB? My broker recommended Aviva because they take my UK driving experience into consideration in their quotes. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
So far I've only come across TD and Johnson who'd take into account UK no claims in ON. I tried to beat TD using Kanetix but on calling the top 5, the prices jumped as driving experience in the boonies (i.e. outside North America) is irrelevant. So still paying $1600 for a 10 year old heap and that's a group discount plan fully comp. Not much discount downgrading to 3rd party.

Auto liability premiums in AB are dictated by the government although the policies are issued and the premiums collected by insurance companies. So, again, it's a matter of politics. My guess is that Alberta governments seek to maintain a private transportation friendly stance as one might expect in an oil producing region. It could also be that driving a jacked up truck while drunk is safer than driving a Toyota Pious while stoned.

Car insurance premiums in most of Canada are subject to gerrymandering, the companies are forever wailing about being forced to keep them unrealistically low.

what im saying is if i had owned a Ford Mondeo in the UK my premium here for the same car would have been double..meaning i could insurance a performance BMW in the UK for what it cost for a bog standard Fusion in Canada.

I'm in AB and 5yrs ago was paying $1460 for a 3yr old GMC Yukon which I swapped for an 2012 3.6L SXT Charger, ins stayed at $1460, today swapped in for 2013 6.4L SRT Charger, ins still $1460.
No rhyme nor reason as to how they work it out.

Agreed. My 2016 challenger was no more expensive than our old charger. (Admittedly I'm still paying around 2400$ a year 😱 But then both me and my partner are under 25).

My last insurance in the U.K something like £450.

What really annoyed me when we first moved to Canada was that some insurance companies wouldn't accept my uk no claims because I was a Canadian Citizen.

We're renting at the moment and our tenants insurance is nearly $1000 per year!
Good Lord, that alone would make me move 4km up the road unless the houses are stupidly more expensive or disgusting. Are they?

I cant recall what ours is as its bundled in with our house insurance but its not a monthly cost that's noticeably more that it was in the UK.
There we also bundled it all and we had a 110 year old house in Horley, Surrey, a 7 year old Citroen Zara and a 2 year old Audi A3 and full no claims history (except for a house fire on that bloody house)

Here we have a 32 year old house, a 1 year old Mitusbishi outlander and a 1 year old VW Golf. Incidentally, love the car and hate that SUV.

We are planning our escape! Hubby is looking at job prospects and once that has been taken care of we will be on the move. Not sure yet in which direction but certainly out of the insurance money pit area!

We just renewed our insurance in BC. With 43% claims free discount its 147/month. Up about $200 for the full year vs last year.

Here's a relevant, if tabloid, piece. One with mysteries of its own:

Ontario roads safest in country but drivers pay the highest premiums, new report says - Toronto - CBC News

Why are the insurance cheats so sympathetically considered? Why is Steve Kee pictured in poorly decorated apartment? Why is he leaning into the picture like some sexual predator about to be bopped by a minor Soprano? Why did they choose a slack jowled slimey looking fellow as the lawyer, do they really all look like Saul?
