Canada Bank Accounts

Re: Canada Bank Accounts
Like many folk, I have maintained a UK bank account. Occasionally, when balances allow, I withdraw cash from the UK current account at any of three nearby banks from their Visa machines and there has been no charge, other than the fee to the UK bank.
Today, at RBC, I was advised by an on screen message there would be an additional $3 fee.
Unusually I actually made two such withdrawals last month, with no charge. I can't recall which machine but if they were RBC then this is a new charge.
But maybe they were at Scotia or TD and it's only RBC with this charge.
Anyone else seen anything like this?

Re: Canada Bank Accounts
We looked at this and HSBC do global banking such that if you have a UK account they will open up Canadian accounts for you before you hit the ground, provided you have the right paperwork - HSBC Canada will also consider your credit history from the UK and so may ease getting credit card etc - would need to check any time delay in the reliance on UK credit history as can't remember if it is instantaneous or after you've had your UK / Canadian accounts for a set period. Though as mentioned above you'd need to think about your use of cash v the prevalence of HSBC outlets / ATMs in respect of any cash withdrawal charges you might face
Credit card wise - American express will port your credit history globally. I was looking at Amex card guidelines in Canada and would generally not qualify, but as soon as i logged in through my UK Amex account I get pre-approved for most cards issued by Amex in Canada and with a decent credit limit, so seems like a good way to get a CC while Canadian credit history builds

You've been lucky. RBC, at least here, have been doing this for a while. It's very annoying: means I have to walk 50 yards rather than use the ATM right outside the front door
