I wouldn't have left our UK house empty, but of course, making that decision was on the basis of several factors.

My suggestion would be not to buy the small house in the UK.
The problem with that is for a study permit, an applicant has to show that they will return to the UK/show ties there. If they've sold their house, that makes that a heck of a lot harder!

Plus of course it gives the OP somewhere to return to as they're only on a temp visa. Or when they discover that Vancouver gets twice the rain of London.

We came on a study visa and open work permit while we had a PR application on the go. We sold the UK house and bought outright here but I wouldn't recommend it. We bought in the wrong place and so sold again after a couple of years which cost money in realtors fees etc but my main reason for not recommending buying was the everyday costs were more than our income could bear so we had to use savings. That of course depends on your spouse's work and likelihood of getting a job, hopefully you've looked into that but even then you can't be certain. We were assured it would be easy to find work but it wasn't and for some time we were on little more than basic wage.

Why would they want to return when Vancouver gets 375 more hours a year of sunshine than London?

No need to be defensive, it was simply a tongue in cheek comment after they complained about the rain in the UK - when Van gets far more rain. Just struck me as rather like somebody complaining that somewhere is too hot and then moving to Death Valley.

I'm sure if rain was a consideration they'd be moving to elsewhere in Canada, it wasn't meant to invoke serious climate comparisons.
