Default Calgary Auto Insurance

I've read through the previous posts of others (mostly in other provinces from the past year) as well as the wiki, but I have some 'special' items to add on too:

Age 50
driving with UK licence since 1985
recent Alberta licence
no accidents in 25 years
no claims proof of 10 years in writing
previous QC and BC licence 2003-2005 (plus insurance and no claims/accidents,)
won't drive to work, just pleasure

I know some places will take my NCB (where in AB? Just Johnsons?), but I'm wondering how my previous Canadian licences come in to this too. I don't have my old licence numbers to extract a driving record, but when I submitted my UK for an exchange, my records were attached on their system.

Any thoughts out there?

I used Allstate, they accepted my uk NCB without any fuss. Cost $1700 fully comp for a Toyota Highlander. If you want the contact details in Calgary NE, pm me.

SGI took my uk history, thought Western Financial Group, not a fantastic broker but the price was right 😉

A company called The Personal accepts UK NCB however they asked me for the DVLA record that I luckily brought with me. That £5 fee for the report before I left the UK was well spent.

You can access DVLA online for free so long as you have your drivers number and last UK address.

Economical also take UK NCB and license into account, I was $1800 for my Honda Ridgeline at 24yo in my first year

I haven't heard of a broker in Calgary that doesn't take UK claims history into account. However, some of the quotes on here are outrageous. We didn't pay as much as has been quoted for 2 cars.

IIRC our Grand Caravan was around $1,000 and then we paid less than $1,500 when we added a Sebring to that some time later.

My 16 year old daughter on a GDL only pays around $2,500

Thanks for all the info.

I've a few people to try now and I'll let you know what I find. Haven't bought the car just yet and have a few on a short-list with a' friend of a friend' who is a "car-broker" and does all the checks and helps with shortlists too.

One last thing: how much NCD can be carried over here?

Turns out that I have copies of letters over the past few years that would cover me back to 2003 as one company was happy to take my 2003-2005 QC and BC NCD too.

I had a conversation with one broker yesterday, but the NCD is not proving easy.

I've been told that I need to contact EVERY insurer that I have had and get a specific start and end date for each policy, each policy number and each one stating no claim with them.

I change my insurer every year or two if the prices go up and have done for a very long time. I don't know about you, but my faith in UK customer services in getting this information without a fight does not fill me with confidence!

Has anyone had a broker/insurer in Alberta who takes our UK proof directly? I have the following letters which confirm me as far back as 2003, but they won't accept them:

Tesco 2016 + 9 years (making it claim free to 2005)
Allianz 2015 + 10 years (2005)
Swinton 2013 + 9 years (2004)
AA 2012 + 9 years (2003)

I don't have anything before the AA 2012 policy despite not having a claim since 1989!

Doesn't it say this in the wiki and each week's thread about car insurance? Your Tesco letter, for example, shows that you had no claims during the year in which you were insured with Tesco so that's one year. If you want to claim another year you need a letter from the previous insurer showing contiguous dates and no claims for that year. It doesn't matter if Tesco believed that you didn't have claims with previous insurers, Tesco can only speak for the time insured with Tesco.

Writing from my own experience, I was insured by Aviva for the last two years in Uk, they wrote a letter stating I had no fault claims for the previous 14 years, they were able to look at my claim history on a shared DB.

Being an insurance company that was recognized here, it was accepted without question. Aviva even knew the layout required when I asked them if they knew what we needed here in Canada.

To any prospective newcomers to Canada, consider changing your insurance to a company and not a broker before you come over.

But thats not how it works in the UK. There the insurers count your previous years and will add it to your NCB. So if you came to Tesco with 5 years NCB from previous insurer and were insured with Tesco for one year, the letter you will get at the end will be 5 + 1 = 6 years.

Wish it worked like that in Canada as well!

What about those with protected NCB? That is the reason why Canadian insurers want evidence of the at fault accidents, or claims, that people have made.

The Motor Insurer's Database in the UK is able to provide everyone with details of their insurers.

I know this. I worked in the industry in the UK as well as in Canada. The insurers know this, many of them write business in both countries. However,
the key point is that Canadian insurers are not interested in your NCB; they're only interested in statements of having been insured for a period and not having claimed during that period, issued by the insurer for that period.
