Sales tax. If you buy a secondhand car privately in Canada (at least in the Provinces I know about) the car is subject to Provincial Sales Tax. Every time it is sold.

Not sure about NS.
Is this not normally just 'priced in' to the price the dealer is asking?
But if buying privately, then good point, a few extras to pay, incl. 'safety check', registration and cost of plates etc. Any emissions check in NS (trivial cost anyway)?
The wiki article here should help@

I was gobsmacked that I had to pay an extra 15% on the price on a used car. Price that in... fortunately, used car prices are pretty decent... you can get a lot of car for around $13k.
I got the MVI done as part of the sale... lasts for two years.
You have to buy your license plate here and an accompanying wee sticker to go on it. I, again, was initially outraged, but it is their version of the road tax. You get a temporary licence plate which you stick to one of your back windows.
Other than that, negotiate with dealers here. Do not take any crap from them

In Canada when you buy a car (or most things) they cant just tell you how much something is going to cost you. Its a shopping list of numbers and BS. It will nearly always be a higher number than you think. They generally speaking wont negotiate as much on price as the UK.
