Exactly. The "how" is the crucial Q. "Where" could be irrelevant.

Yes, I totally get that. We are working on the how, but we want the "how" to work were we choose to live, so are considering both alongside each other (and there is where we would hope to invest). I know it appears upside-down, but as I said this is a lifestyle move and if it doesn't tick certain boxes then we don't make the move.

That makes total sense. But do bear in mind that if you do need a sponsoring job offer to get a visa, you may not get to choose where you want to live, but could of course move to your chosen area further down the line once you get PR. So somewhere else may need to be a stepping stone to a visa, depending on where your jobs are in demand etc.

Best of luck to you.

The bus crash affinity displays are crass in that they're an excuse for fancy dress in the office when people are dead. We wouldn't see a "wear a gas mask" day for the Syrians. They're only acceptable because the bus crash victims represent a Canada that's fading away, cradle Canada, and some people are nostalgic for that. I think that sort of display in the workplace is a mistake; few people can participate and it's not going to foster good relations between those joining in and the rest of us.

Can we get this thread back on track for the OP please? If you want to discuss dbd's views or the bus crash, please do so in a separate thread, thanks.

Hi, sorry if I’m not doing this right by asking another question- this is only my second post -but just wanted to ask a question regarding BC.

We are relocating to Canada
this year & would love some advice on good areas to live within commutable distance (Sky Train) to Vancouver.

If possible could you list some good areas with good schools & more reasonable rental prices than in the city. Many thanks

Look at the map and stay away from Surrey.

Hi there!

I'm not sure what your definition of reasonable is, but the less expensive areas along the SkyTrain lines are New Westminster, North Surrey and Port Moody/Coquitlam.

I own a condominium (flat) near the City Centre/Whalley part of Surrey, and it takes me 6-7 minutes to walk to the King George SkyTrain Station. From there, it takes about 35-40 minutes to get to downtown Vancouver.

I quite like my area. It's close to parks, plenty of grocery stores and restaurants, medical and recreation facilities, and there are many families who live here.

Some parts of City Centre/Whalley used to have (still does I guess) a reputation as being hot spots for crime. I do not feel unsafe and crime has dropped significantly in the past few years (and it was/is mostly gang and drug related). The city of Surrey has made great strides in redeveloping the area and it shows with the amount of new construction that is taking place and the rapid increase in property values.

New Westminster is still considered a hub for blue collar workers and it has an interesting and fun vibe in the downtown core. Like in my neighbourhood, it is undergoing redevelopment. Except for near the Sapperton Station, the remaining New West SkyTrain stops are near condominiums, instead of houses.

The Evergreen extension brought the Millennium SkyTrain line to Port Moody/Coquitlam. These are more affluent communities compared with North Surrey and New West and this will reflect in rental costs.

Unfortunately I cannot really comment about the schools as I do not have kids. However; the Fraser Institute, a non-partisan, Vancouver-based think tank issues an annual ranking of B.C.'s schools. It might be of help to you.

Compare academic rankings and ratings of British Columbia schools

Best of luck!

Ahem...

Dramatic spike pushes Kamloops crime rate higher than any major city in Canada

Did you see the date on that article? I got no problem with gang members killing each other so long as they don't hurt the public in the process.

As for metro Vancouver homicides, I quite fancy Delta.

Yes. From last July and based on most recent annual crime severity data released by Statistics Canada.

NO NO NO!!!!

As someone who has lived in Vancouver for almost 50 years, has had a child go through the school and been otherwise involved in the product of schools in BC, and seen many many FI reports published in the media ................... do not trust FI reports.

It is a right-wing think tank ....... not non-partisan at all!

They have an agenda, and their reports are based on only a relatively small number of criteria.

Basically all that a newcomer needs to know is that Canada is not like the UK ............. there are not good schools that you have to absolutely get your child into and not so good ones.

All schools have the same criteria for education, stated by the provincial Department of Education and overseen by the district Boards of Education. The schools draw their students from the catchment area where you live.

Some schools in very poor areas, eg the downtown eastside, may even have BETTER teachers that ones in wealthier areas.

Much better to determine where you want to live based on where work is and housing values and the commute to get from home to work. Then look at the schools that draw from your area.

Some high schools especially in big cities will have specialist programmes in eg, fine arts, ballet, hockey, which allow super students in those sports keep up with training and schooling, and those high schools may draw students from across a city, ie students are allowed to cross school lines to attend one outside their residential area.

As regards areas to live ........... Surrey is booming, population increasing rapidly, rapid transit across the city is at least 5 years away (from past experience of building rapid transit in this province), and there are still areas that are not too pleasant.

Port Moody is looking very attractive at the moment, with lots of housing of various types being built. A new rapid transit line from Vancouver out to Coquitlam and PM opened in December 2016 thus making transit easier.

I burst out laughing at "non-partisan".
