HI, just a quick question ... I have a BC drivers license .. do I have to convert to AB license after a certain period of being in AB ? also is it a straight swap ? cheers.

You do and it is a swap unless you are on a GLP or had a new license under 2 years.

Here is one to watch for if you do exchange your licence.. check the expiry date of the new one as it may not necessarily be five years from the date of issue.

Some friends of ours moved in the other direction - Alberta to BC.
They are Canadian and had lived in Alberta for years and held full Alberta licences since they started driving.

They moved from Calgary to Sooke just over 2 years ago and on arrival both swapped their licences.

The other week they were pulled (here in Sooke) on a routine traffic check.
He was driving and fined for having an expired BC licence. His wife jumped in the drivers seat and they continued the journey.

It turned out that when they swapped for BC licences hers was issued for five years his was only two

There was no logical explanation for this.

Your first BC license is issued for 2 years. If one of them had held a BC license before, that would be why. If not, someone screwed up and issued a 5 year for one of them. The expiry date is printed on the license and ICBC send out renewal notices in the mail, so I guess he did not look at either... and the expiry is on your birthday.
