Applying for jobs in Canada after emigrating

Hello

I hope I'm posting this in the correct part , there were so many I wasn't sure.

I have recently been accepted for a working travel visa (my bf is in the British army and is being posted there for 2 years and this was the one recommended for me to get).

I am not looking to move over until January/February of next year but have been looking into jobs just to get an insight.

Currently I am a medical secretary and admin and have been for a number of years after gaining a business admin qualification ,however I have also been to college and got a qualification in health and social care.

When I am looking for jobs it is asking if I have certain quals but they are in Canadian terms and therefore I'm not sure if mine are equivalent or not. With my quals from college I have a wide range of jobs I could apply for here in the UK but I'm not sure if they are going to mean anything over in Canada as with my business admin qual.

I have seen that you can get your quals transferred over into Canadian quals but wasnt sure of how to go about this or whether it was just a scam.

Does anyone have any advice or knowledge on what is best to do?

I'm moving to Alberta ( hopefully Medicine Hat) if this helps.

Thanks in advance

You may get more responses to this if it was posted in the Moving to Canada forum. This section is for people looking for jobs whereas it seems you're looking for advice.

There are some organisations which will assess your qualifications for Canadian equivalence. I used WES. It isn't cheap and requires some time investment and so I'd make sure you need to get this done before doing it.

Beyond that I can't help sorry! Maybe a mod could move the post for you.

Choose from this link to get qualifications assessed
Where can I get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)?

WES is probably the most common one used.

You won't need to get them done for admin jobs. Just make sure your resume lists your qualifications in a way Canadians will understand.

Sort of like Brew Master = Tea Maker
Beverage Dissemination Officer = Bartender
Pet stylist: “Someone responsible for maintaining pets’ appearance and hygiene.”
Chick Sexer: This person determines the gender of baby chickens.

Lol. Something like that.

PA/personal assistant will mean nothing to them and they'll think you're some kind of carer. Executive assistant is the Canadian equivalent. Sales admin/account manager here is internal sales...

Yep, accountant is a Director of Finance here. FFS. They love their titles here.

If you're looking at medical secretary jobs then it would be useful to find an online course before you move. I'm thinking of medical billing in particular.
